Blackjack:
GW makes the only games I know where doing your best is considered poor sportsmanship.
But there is so much more to the game... themed armies, while not always incredibly effective in battle, are a blast to play because they offer something to talk about the whole battle long;
"Here's the Red Claw Tribe of the Notsewheigh Mountains. Luckily for the men of the Empire, they are led by a group of power-hungry (and inept) Shamen. This is deemed as "fortunate" due to the fact that while the incredible power of the Waaagh!, when properly harnessed is devastating, this group seems to struggle to maintain control. More often than not, a Waaagh! from the Notsewheigh Mountains is ended not by some Preceptor or Elector Count striking down a Warboss (as is so common with other greenskin incursions). Rather several Shamen have their heads dissapear in an incandescant ball of green Waaagh!-energy, and those orcs foolish (or awestruck) enough to be standing in the near vicinity are incinerated by the rolling wave of pure destruction."
Never mind that, there is the painting, the collecting, and the sparing between opponents. I know that you have said that I'm a little "rough" in that department, but you must have noticed that I treated you and Sean (the poor beastman player to whom I said "I give you 2.5 rounds before this is over) very differently. I've known Sean since I've opened the store, and you've been a relatively new player (having only been in once to test out your Armoured Fist company against my Tyranids). If I know a player, there is a fair amount of trash-talk that goes around the table (seems to be fairly prevailent at RCG... wonder why
), but that doesn't mean that it doesn't take shape at GW Tournaments, if only in different (and possibly more polite) forms. There's also the love of the hobby, and the appreciation of those who play/paint/collect/further the hobby itself.
I guess that what I'm trying to say is that GW isn't the only game where "Powergaming" exists; it's all over, from CCG's to MMO's. Where I believe that the poor sportsmanship exists is in cheating, in under-handed tactics (Oh, did I roll double 1's?
or possibly moving, then constantly re-moving or pre-measuring spells/guess-ranged etc) and in just being an all-around poor-sport (complaining, gloating, etc).
Anyways, I've gone on long enough... time to get off the soap-box and let someone else take up all of your time for awhile.
Cheers,
Tom @ Red Claw
