Army Lists: All lists must follow the current rules using the Middle Earth SBG Rulebook (Eye of Sauron Cover). Any publication produced by GW for MESBG containing profiles for Middle Earth SBG are allowed in the tournament. Any rules released by the Middle Earth Team at Games Workshop before September 28, 2024 at 10:00pm, will be accepted at the event.
Army Composition: An army must have a minimum of 4 models, there is no maximum model count aside from what the points value will allow. There are no Alliance restrictions to army composition for this tournament (beyond what is already in the rules of the game or FAQs). Legendary Legions are permitted and will operate as described in their respective Sourcebook (along with any FAQs). Tom Bombadil, Goldberry and Smaug are banned from inclusion in any list.
Army List Submissions: Army lists for Edmonton 2024 MESBG Tournament must be submitted by Direct Facebook Message to Evan Pound, Jordan Daniel, or via email to edmontonmesbgslowgrow@gmail.com prior to September 28, 2024 at 10:00pm. Please include total model count and breakpoint with your submission. Scenario Selection: Scenarios will be chosen at the start of each round. One of the TOs will roll a dice to determine which pool of scenarios will be options for the given round. Once a pool is rolled for one of the rounds, it cannot be chosen to be played again. To Veto: Both players will roll a D6, the person with the lower roll will veto the first scenario and the other player will veto between theremaining two. You will play the last remaining scenario as normally described in the Matched Play Guide.
Tournament Scoring: We will be using Longshanks to manage tournament points and scoring. It will be required that you inform the Tournament Organizer what your username is. The Tournament Organizer will then explain how to access the Tournament itself.
Pairings: The pairings for round one will be randomly drawn prior to the event and announced before round one on the day. If you are travelling to the event from outside the city with people and would rather not play one of your companions in the first round, send an email to by Facebook Direct Facebook Message to Evan Pound, Jordan Daniel, or via email to edmontonmesbgslowgrow@gmail.com prior to September 28, 2024 at 10:00pm with the names of the players in your travelling group and we do our best and accommodate you (this should be in the same email as your army list submission). For the rest of the tournament, pairings will be determined by the Longshanks website itself.
CODE OF CONDUCT: At the end of the day, we are simply pushing around model soldiers and rolling dice. MESBGis agamewith an element of randomness, where you can be the perfect general and still lose, or a horrible general and win. Try to have fun and be as courteous and respectful towards your opponents and opponent’s models as possible. If your opponent has questions about your army list or army-specific rules, answer them honestly and prove to your opponent that is how a rule is played by showing them the appropriate rule/FAQ/etc.
Proxies, Conversions and Third-Party Models: Conversions and third-party models are welcome so long as they follow some guidelines. All third-party models, conversions and proxies must be “What you see is what you get” as in they can’t be treated as having war gear they are not modelled with. They must also scale appropriately to the models made by Games Workshop, for example 32mm scale figures like the Song of Ice and Fire ones would not be allowed. They must also bear likeness to the model they are standing in for and be easily identifiable as them. At the start of each round, you should make your opponent aware of what your proxies/conversions and/or third-party models are.
Any other questions at all about this or if you are unsure if your proxies will be valid, please contact the TOs via Direct Facebook Message to Evan Pound, Jordan Daniel, or via email to edmontonmesbgslowgrow@gmail.com
Regarding Dice: Dice are expected to be rolled! Always roll your dice in a location where your opponent can see your dice rolling. Please avoid picking up dice before your opponent has the chance to see the results (even for re-rolls). When possible put rolled dice to the side to represent rolls as appropriate until all dice rolling is done. Try to avoid rolling dice too close to terrain or models as you risk damaging and/or moving them. It also increases the chances of encountering a cocked dice (A dice that does not lie flat). If a cocked dice is rolled, before anything is done, attempt to place a second dice on-top of the cocked dice. If the second dice does not fall off the cocked dice, the result stands, otherwise re-roll the dice to get a result. Were commend using a dice tray and only counting any dice that are rolled and stay within the tray. For example, if a dice flies out of the box, it must be re-rolled.
Regarding Movement: This is a true game of millimetres and a margin of human error does exist in playing, so be sure to make your intentions clear prior to moving models. Be sure to show your opponent what you want to do before moving any models and confirm that the movement is available to do so when measurements are narrow before touching any models involved. Always respect your opponent’s intentions as well. Do not move a model unless you are certain that is where you want to move it. If you start to move a model but do not mark its original position, then decide you want to move it back, your opponent reserves the right to deny you from moving that model back to its original location as you cannot actually confirm that is the original position.
We recommend bringing some extra bases to check potential new positions before committing to them to avoid any movement rules disputes.
Always establish any movement intentions (control zone areas, distances, etc.). Once established intentions are clear and agreed upon they will be respected by both players.
Ex: If Bob wishes to place his orc models 5.1” away from John’s Dwarf battleline so he cannot be charged next turn should he lose priority. Bob should explicitly explain to John that he wants to move his models to be 5.1” away from his battle line and show the measurement. This way John can confirm that Bob’s models will in fact 5.1” away from John’s dwarves. This means if the table gets bumped or a measurement was slightly inaccurate, that next turn should John win priority and his dwarves are within 5”, he still should not be able to charge the enemy orc models as the two of them agreed the models were 5.1” apart at the end of the last turn.
Terrain: As terrain comes in many shapes and sizes, prior to any roll-offs and deployment discuss each terrain piece on the board. A board should always have a fair distribution of terrain and balanceso that both side's deployments may done without unreasonable restrictions. Determine any rules that may be encountered within or near specific terrain pieces before any objectives are placed, models are deployed, or sides are chosen. Note, as a principle of fair play, placing objectives in difficult terrain should be avoided whenever possible, especially if a suitable alternative, that is fair to both players, exists. If you and your opponent cannot establish a ruling on any given terrain piece(s) ask the TO to decide the rulings on them. If you and your opponent do not discuss the terrain features beforehand and encounter a rules disagreement on how the terrain is played immediately call a TO over to make a ruling on it.
If for whatever reason the terrain on the board makes a Scenario unplayable (an objective in impassable terrain, etc.) call a TO. If necessary for a fair gaming experience, a TO has the right to adjust the board terrain accordingly.
Rules Disputes: If you are unsure about a rule your opponent is implementing, ask them to prove that this is how said rule works by showing you the relevant rule/FAQ for it.
If there is a rules dispute that can not be solved by the players at their table, please consult with a TO. The TO will make a ruling on the dispute and the players must accept that ruling as TO has final judgement. The TO may consult with others before making their ruling. Any rules regarding terrain will automatically be brought up with the TO.
Prizing: The prizing for this event will encompass the new (re)releases from Games Workshop. Prizing will be determined based on final ticket sales.
